AFPC Edmonton is pleased to have Katherine White join us to discuss Alberta’s economic outlook. Katherine is Chief Economist, Alberta Finance and Enterprise, and the Executive Director of the Economics, Demography, and Public Finance branch where she leads a team of professional economists and demographers.
Alberta’s resource based economy provides many opportunities for Albertans and challenges for those tasked with forecasting its economic growth. As producers and exporters of energy, a very volatile but highly valued commodity, Alberta’s economy is subject to the ups and down of global markets as we try and plan for our future and optimize our resources. The impacts of global and national economic developments will be discussed in “Alberta’s Economic Outlook” with a view to why this matters for Alberta’s economic prospects, businesses and households.
Kate obtained her Bachelor of Science in Economics from Dalhousie University in Halifax and later on moved to Calgary where she worked for the Bank of Montreal as an investment advisor for several years. Calgary is where Kate was very fortunate to meet her future husband and begin a family. While raising a family Kate decided to pursue a Masters in Economics at the University of Calgary. After working as a researcher for Dr. Ron Kneebone at the Institute for Advanced Policy Research, Kate earned her Masters degree and moved to Edmonton to pursue a career in the public service. She has enjoyed an exciting career with the government of Alberta as Deputy Chief Economist and Senior Policy Advisor for the Strategic Resource Allocation unit with Alberta Finance and Enterprise as well Senior Policy Advisor for the Oil Sands Secretariat at Alberta Treasury Board. She has also held positions at Alberta Municipal Affairs and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development.
Kate has a great passion for her chosen profession and has volunteered with the Economic Society of Northern Alberta since 2007. She is currently the Vice-president of ESNA.
