RBC Spring Economic Briefing Presentation

George Davis, CMT - Managing Director & Chief Technical Analyst, FIC Strategy

The themes driving financial markets have shifted dramatically over the past six months, with the market moving away from the "risk on/risk off" dynamic that had been in place since the credit crisis began to a more traditional response to macroeconomic data. On the domestic front, the Canadian dollar has depreciated in response to a repricing of interest rate risk resulting from less hawkish rhetoric from the Bank of Canada. Please join us for a discussion of these themes, along with the presentation of our revised Canadian growth, interest rate and FX forecasts. Important points of discussion will revolve around when we anticipate the first tightening from the BoC to materialize, and how low we expect the Canadian dollar to trade in the current environment. Our analysis will also include a discussion of important technical price levels to watch in USD/CAD that can be incorporated in to hedging strategies for H2 2013. We will also update our work on key variables that should be watched in order to assess the trend bias in the Canadian dollar.
