Greg Hamilton VP Programs |
In Calgary, I was exposed to many AFP treasury events and experienced first-hand how such a tight-knit treasury community brought numerous benefits to the various treasury professionals in the city. Upon returning to Edmonton to be both closer to family and lead the treasury implementation at Firma, I was excited to bring my treasury and finance experience to the Edmonton area to help increase the treasury presence in the community. Edmonton doesn’t have as many dedicated treasury professionals as Calgary, but has a very integrated accounting, finance and treasury community, which provides a lot of learning and networking opportunities. What is your career and background? Currently at Firma, a global currency exchange and global payments company, I oversee the Treasury department, which includes our Cash Management, Financial Risk, Position (back office trading) and Treasury Innovation & Operations teams. I joined Firma two and a half years ago with the mandate to implement a best in class treasury department. Prior to joining Firma I spent almost 14 years with the ATCO Group of Companies, the last 7 in the Treasury department in ATCO Ltd.’s corporate office in Calgary. As Manager, Treasury Operations, I managed ATCO’s global, consolidated treasury operations. It was during this time that I obtained by Certified Treasury Professional designation after finding a passion for Treasury and Cash Management. Prior to my career in treasury, as a Chartered Professional Accountant, I worked in various accounting roles from financial planning to regulatory to operations and cash management with ATCO in the Controller’s Department. What is your role with AFP Edmonton? At AFP Edmonton, I am VP Programs, which means chairing the Events Committee and leading the process of acquiring speakers and guests for our training, luncheons and networking events. What do you think AFP Edmonton brings to the community?AFP Edmonton has the resources, events and expertise to bring the knowledge, training and networking to Edmonton’s finance, treasury and accounting professionals. Who is someone you admire or who inspires you and why? My wife, who is a pilot with Jazz Aviation (Air Canada Express). As a female pilot she inspires people from all walks of life, including women and girls, to follow their dreams and pursue their passions. It has not been an easy journey for her as a female in a male dominated industry, but her dedication and perseverance to get to where she is, is very inspirational. What are you passionate about? Sports photography! Several years ago, before my career took me to Calgary to pursue treasury, I was pursuing various opportunities into sports photography, including professional football, mixed-martial arts and show-jumping opportunities, junior hockey, high-school sports and other amateur sports. |
